Hurricane Season Begins

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1, 2025 and runs until November 30, 2025. As it did in 2024, the Disaster Equity Data Portal (DEDP) will publish raw data and dashboards for storms that receive a presidential disaster declaration, if data is available. This data, drawn from the Individuals and Households Program, shows where people are applying for assistance, the extent of damage they report to their homes, and whether they are receiving aid.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an above-average number of storms for this summer and fall:

“The agency is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 6-10 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges.”

The 2024 season had 18 named storms, 11 of which were hurricanes, and 5 of which were major hurricanes. Five storms — Hurricanes Beryl, Debby, Francine, Helene, and Milton — made landfall in the continental United States. NOAA cannot predict where the hurricanes will form and so cannot predict the number of hurricanes that might make landfall in 2025.

The (DEDP) can be a resource for community advocates and emergency managers this hurricane season to understand how storms are affecting the communities they serve, what impacts have been felt, and to what extent the Individuals and Households Program is assisting applicants. In the 2024 hurricane season, the hurricanes that made landfall received presidential disaster declarations that made FEMA public and individual assistance, among other federal resources, available to impacted people. The DEDP used data from the individual assistance program to create dashboards for Hurricanes Beryl and Helene, available one month and two weeks after the storms, respectively. With the Florida Housing Coalition, we created dashboards for Hurricanes Idalia (which struck Florida in 2023), Debby, Helene, and Milton that were released in February 2025. All of these dashboards contain valuable data on the distribution of FEMA applicants, individual assistance eligibility and awards, and housing damage.

To the extent that data is available, we will publish similar dashboards for the 2025 season and post weekly updated Individual Assistance data for all hurricanes that receive a Presidential Disaster Declaration — this declaration makes the Individual Assistance program available. As always, please use the contact form with any requests for specific data or questions about specific data.
